Obituary of Harry Chambers
Please share a memory of Harry to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Harry Eugene Chambers, son of the late Fred and Ellen Chambers, was born July 24, 1932 in Beulah, MO and passed away at the age of 81 on March 15, 2014.
Preceding Harry in death were his parents; wife, Anna; two sons, James and Clinton Chambers; two brothers, Dale and Jerry Chambers; and two sisters, Fern Warneke and Helen Miller.
He is survived by two brothers and two sisters, Donald Chambers and wife Lenora of Rolla, MO, Glen Chambers and wife Nadine of Licking, Mo, Cleo Williams of Licking, MO, and Patsy and husband Robert Fluehr of Moscow Mills, MO; his children, Udena Bates and husband Lloyd of Licking, MO, Beth Neth and husband Rick of Batesville, MS, and Lonnie Chambers and wife Lori of Winona, MO; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and a large extended family.
Harry grew up on the family farm, where he worked and played with his brothers and sisters. He learned the value of hard work, love of family, and respect for one another. While reminiscing his childhood, he talked about how sometimes neighbors would have to borrow a “coal of fire” because their fire had gone out and they didn’t even have a match.
As a young adult, Harry was united in marriage to Lorene Mansfield and to this union five children were born. He worked various jobs; one being the Union Biscuit Company in St. Louis, MO. In January of 1953, he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. He received United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in December of 1954 to return home to his family. He then spent many years working at the grocery store in Licking, MO.
Later in life, Harry moved to Columbia, MO after marrying Anna Fisher. There, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and especially sitting in a lawn chair in the middle of his yard with a frog gig “mole hunting”. In 2008, he moved to Winona, Mo, where he continued to make more friends.
When his country called him to service, Harry served with honor. As he was with his term in the Army, he was a good soldier in life. While going through hard times in life and poor health, he didn’t complain.
Whenever you see a deer jump or a squirrel climb a tree, think of Harry. Whenever you see tomatoes on a vine or a big juicy cantaloupe, think of Harry. Whenever you see or smell a freshly mowed lawn, think of Harry. He dearly loved all of his family and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
