Obituary of Richard E Paschal

Richard Edison Paschal better known as “Dick” or “Dicky” to his mom and childhood friends, was born November 6, 1935 to Paul Leroy Paschal Sr and Effie Maye Tuttle Paschal in Winston-Salem, NC.  Dick passed away on October 2, 2019.

His wife, Iva Loree Barfield Paschal, his parents, his brother and best friend Paul Leroy Paschal Jr, dear sister-in-law Dorothy Paschal, sister Betty Jean Wooten, childhood friend and brother-in-law Jim Wooten,  baby brother Kennith Jennsen Paschal, his father and mother-in-law Claude and Norma Barfield, brothers-in-law Sonny Barfield and Billy Mosely all preceded  him to our heavenly home. 

Dick went to school at Wiley Elementary and graduated from RJ Reynolds HS in Winston-Salem, NC.  He later gained his college education, attending Clemson University, Auburn University, and Georgia Tech.

Richard received an Honorable Discharge from both the Navy and the Army.  He was a Medical Specialist on the battlefront seeing the ravages of war and attending the injured and dead during the Korean War.  He was proud to serve his country while making memories both good and bad and receiving several medals.  Returning to the states, he was stationed in Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC.  This is where he met and married Iva Loree Barfield.  They were married over 40 years and had three beautiful children (Dick’s pride and joy).

Dick belonged to the Lutheran Church in Camden, SC for many years.

Dick worked and travelled extensively overseas for Elkay Industries with the corporate office in New York City, NY and his personal office in Camden, SC for over 30 years.  He finished his career with his company, Hummingbird, corporate offices of Jc Penney, and Fruit of the Loom. 

In recent years he has been enjoying his retirement in Missouri and travelling to several countries and across the USA with his wife in their camper; spending several weeks at Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, SC. 

Surviving are his children, Richard Kevin Paschal, (Kim), Pamela Loree Paschal Branham Nichols (Tommy), and Carole Leigh Paschal Platte Kibler (Tony); grandchildren, Morgan Antoinette Paschal, Steven Paul Branham, Elizabeth Loree Platte Lund (Josh), and David Anthony Platte; great grandchildren, Banks Lund, Palmer Loree Lund, and Hanley Edison Lund.  He was lovingly called Paw Paw by all of them.  Also surviving are nephews, David (Marilyn) Paschal, Kyle Wooten and Forrest Wooten; niece, Jean Fullerton; great nephews, Slade Paschal and Justin Paschal and their families.

In 2003, Dick married Carolyn “Cookie” Elledge Sullins making her part of the Paschal family.  In this marriage, he gained a stepson, John Eugene Sullins; step granddaughters, Sara Cookie Sullins Edwards (Evan) and Elizabeth Ashley Sullins; step great grandchildren, John Eugene Sullins II, Jacob Levi Edwards, Emily Joy Edwards, and Jordan Edwards.  This family loved Dick and he loved them.  They all called him Paw Paw Dick or Dicky Poo. 

Dick resided in Missouri until his passing.  He leaves his loving wife, Carolyn; mother-in-law, Maye Elledge; step father-in-law, Walter Robbins; sisters-in-law, Shirley (Gary Settlemire), Leonia (Warren) Livingston, and Kaye (Rich) Haaland; brother-in-law, Eddie Elledge, Kenny Elledge, and Norman Elledge; along with numerous nieces and nephews.  This family and several friends will mourn his passing and remember his stories and his quick wit.

A committal service with military honors for Dick will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 1:00 PM at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229.  Arrangements entrusted to Fox Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be left at www.foxfh.net.
