Doc blessed me so much in sharing his love for God and all of creation. So thankful for how he poured into my life as both teacher and church family. I'll always cherish my memories of our stream team trips, forestry/field excursions, Envirothon team, and classroom memories full extra credit little critters! :)

Doc was my biology and chemistry teacher in the late 90's-2000's. As soon as I walked into his classroom, I could tell immediately that he was going to be an amazing teacher. Doc made learning so much fun, but was to the point. He loved all of us kids, as did we. He instilled his knowledge into us, nurtured us, and most importantly, he believed in us when no other's would. He pushed us to chase our dreams and to be a brighter light in this world.
Thank you Doc for everything, we all love you..

A Letter to Dan
Thursday, January 18, 2024
Dear Dan,
As news of your sudden passing settles, I can't help but think how much you would have enjoyed this day. The sun is shining brightly, the temperature is warmer than it's been for almost a week, and the birds are so active! They are loving the warmer temps and even singing this morning. The chickadees, mourning doves, nuthatches and juncos are fighting the red squirrel for a prime spot at the feeder. And the bluebirds and mourning doves are taking advantage of the small puddles, creating by the melting snow, to take a hasty bath, or a drink. A lone northern harrier flies low over our hay field, and a meadowlark sings from a fence post. I've always enjoyed watching birds, and you encouraged and shared this passion with me. Who will I text when I find the remains of a snow goose in winter; the first hummingbird shows up at my feeders in early spring; when the last purple martins depart in mid-summer; when the Canada geese migrate in the fall? Who will help me identify a little sparrow, a lone waterfowl on our pond, a curious wren in our barn? You listened, you showed interest, you truly cared about others, about me. You were always a teacher, willing to share your knowledge and love of life with all who passed your way. You will be greatly missed, by your wife and family, by your friends, and by me. Thank you, for all you've taught me, for all you shared with me, for being my friend.
Happy Birding!

There are so many good memories I have of Dan. One of my favorites were our talks about Indian artifacts & the Osage Indians. I talked him into bringing some of his arrowhead collection to Missouri State-West Plains when I was there for an exhibition. It is an amazing collection and the ones he brought were from our river farm, so even more special to me. He touched so many lives and contributed so much to our community. I will dearly miss him. Much love and sympathy to his wonderful family.

I was so saddened to hear the news of Docs passing. He made everyone around him just, better. He could make anyone he spoke to feel special or important. Especially the people who truly needed it. He is so beloved by everyone. To his family, I'm so sorry for the huge loss you all are experiencing. In a lifetime, you can only hope to help mold, encourage and educate half as many people as Doc did seemlessly. He will never be forgotten.

Doc will forever be one of our favorite people! He and Cookie have made a huge impact on the lives of Evy and I. Always smiling, always proud of our adventure stories, always excited to hear what was in the turkeys stomachs, and always driving around looking for birds. I will miss him very much. Thankful for all the things he taught me and his listening ear.

From the first time that we met Dan, he truly made us feel like family. I am truly blessed to call him my father-in-law. I do not have a lot of photos of Dan but the memories myself and the kids and grandkids have will never be forgotten. From fishing, asking about snakes, mushrooms, trees, bugs or birds. He will surely be missed by everyone.

Was shocked when I heard the news. Doc was my mentor and friend. He inspired me as one of his students all four years of high-school. I will always be grateful for the letter he wrote to me while I was fighting in Desert Storm. Condolences to Cookie and family.

I am still shocked and saddened by this news. Doc was a great teacher, mentor, and friend to so many. I'll never forget all the field trips we took in the three years I had him for a teacher. There are too many memories to recount here. We will miss you here, but look forward to seeing you again.

There are no words to express my heartbreak over Doc's passing. He was a good teacher, and more significantly, he was a good man. My heartbreak is quelled slightly by the legacy he left behind. My thoughts are with Cookie and the whole family.
Thank you for everything Doc. Until we meet again.

I have bragged about having you as a teacher and friend so much over the years, as if I were mentioning a celebrity. You were one of my three greatest mentors in school and life. I was always challenged to do better and be better by you. I learned so much from you that not only helped with college but as a student in life. From outings on the river, hiking through fields, crawling in caves, science fairs, working in the lab, pickling critters, sponsoring science club, speech competitions, and visits to your home letting my kids chase the chickens and so many other things. I felt like one of yours and Cookie's kids. You were the only person I knew that could compute on 3×5 index cards at greater speed and accuracy than a computer. I still use them on occasion thanks to you. Thank you for your steadfastness in life as an example to me in all aspects of my life. Thank you Cookie, David, and Melissa for sharing him so freely with the rest of us. Now with the Creator of the creation he loved so much.

My sincere and deepest sympathy to Cookie and all. Doc in my mind can only be described as my most favorite teacher out of all my schooling. The short year and half I experienced his knowledge and teachings left a lifetime impression. His beaming smile and boisterous voice calling your name rings in the back of my mind. He will forever be remembered as a dedicated educator who loved his subject and was a follower of Christ. I thank him for all his friendship, teachings and overall kindness. I pray God be with everyone who he left behind and bring comfort.
